A Warm Place to Get In Out of the Rain and Eat a Good Dinner!
Despite the rain last night, I swung by Whole Foods on Chicago Avenue in Evanston to meet my friend Mike. I was going to treat at Burger King but he opted to treat at Dave’s Italian Kitchen, a delicious decision I might add. It was a dreary night, and I had not brought a cap nor an umbrella. My headband kept my ears warm but my hair was slightly damp. Mike had the remains of his cherished umbrella that he bought in England a couple of years ago.
We descended into the restaurant at 1635 Chicago Avenue in Evanston a moment after Mike had given a quarter to a homeless guy between Whole Foods and Dave’s Italian Kitchen. Since I had a recent stint as a homeless person I don’t feel as obligated to give to the homeless myself, the opposite effect that homelessness or a period of low funds has on some people.
True to Dave’s philosophy of having more kitchen than dining area, we got to wait for a moment while a booth was cleaned. The time to prepare our dinner during which we ate freshly cooked bread was worth it. I had Spaghetti Marinara Primavera with broccoli, carrots and red peppers, and Mike ordered Balsamic chicken, a mixture of fresh vegetables and chicken. The portions were generous, and I had my left-overs for breakfast this morning, and it was a hearty breakfast.
I wrote out a check to Mike for the twenty dollars I owed him, and he put the meal and the tip on his credit card. Hmm. I feel a little guilty. Plus he walked me over to the Davis Street el stop where I waited for the Pace 208 Bus to take me home. At least I didn’t ask him to walk home, get his car and drive me home in the rain. Not that he probably would have anyway.
