Bookstores in Evanston IL
There are bookstores everywhere — but Evanston IL, not surprisingly, can compete with the meanest Chicago bookstores on the block. Right in downtown Evanston, we’ve got our big chain bookstores – Borders and Barnes and Noble. These also double as late night cafes (Border’s especially) with closing hours at 11 am and midnight on Friday. It’s not the 1 am of Myopic Books, Chi-town, but the café is great.
If chain bookstores aren’t your thing or you have more eclectic tastes, there are smaller bookstores and used bookstores. Bookman’s Alley on Sherman, Evanston IL for one, has an impressive collection of antique books. On Main Street and Chicago Avenue, there’s a used bookstore every couple feet, along with the vintage clothing stores.
Howard’s Bookstore (on Maple in Evanston IL) is another one of many used bookstores. When I shopped there, a very nice gentleman even offered to call other used bookstores in the area (seems they’re all friends or something) to find my science fiction BDSM erotica story for me (by “sci-fi BDSM erotica” I mean, “The Da Vinci Code”).
Wow, so friendly. What a friendly town, Evanston IL is. I was thinking that when I entered another nearby “bookstore” which happened to be someone’s house. To be fair, there were giant windows that showed giant bookshelves from floor to ceiling. It looked like a store. The man was slightly horrified, but friendly nonetheless. Offered to call his friend, who had an impressive library, when he didn’t have what I wanted. Evanston IL is just full of AWESOME.
But stranger things have happened, like the time I heard Nine Inch Nails on the old Euro Station (then, ENERGY 92.7).
Evanston IL has an impressive number of bookstores and used bookstores (not to mention, ADVENTURE)…and I didn’t even get into the comic book shops. But that’s for another time.
