Church Street Tower Still Up In The Air

The controversy over Evanston’s would-be tallest tower may be coming to a conclusion sometime by the end of summer. The Planning and Development Committee delayed a vote that could have ended the debate and instead decided to hold off until they have the final details worked out on the plan for downtown development and revitalization. Only then do they want to consider the proposed high-rise and decide if it fits with the surroundings and long-term development goals for the town.

For almost two years the committee has been trying to craft a vision on paper for what the downtown should strive for in terms of new buildings, businesses and homes. The proposed 708 Church Street tower has been shortened from 49 to 38 stories but still would be able to claim the title of tallest high-rise outside of Chicago proper and in all the suburbs.

The developer would have to present a solid arguement that his high-rise would bring more benefits than drawbacks to Evanston and its residents, and according to the alderman that just hasn’t been done yet. The developer would have to obtain waivers for both zoning and density restrictions currently in place. Most local residents feel strongly that by allowing the tower to be built, it will change the character of the town and pave the way for more high-rises to be constructed. We’ll have to wait and see how this one eventually plays out.

In the meantime, you can check out other less controversial suburban and Chicago real estate projects in the New Home Construction in Chicago section.
