Evanston IL Enacts Smoking Ban on Bars, Restaurants

Perhaps you know it as the euphemistic “Clean Air Act / Ordinance,” passed by Evanston IL on April 24 to go in effect July 1. Bars, restaurants, clubs, and all common areas will now be smoke free. I don’t know how exaggerated secondhand smoke hazards are, but I know I hate smelling like it when I get home.

It’s true; Evanston IL has followed Skokie, Chicago, and New York City into becoming a “sidewalk city,” where smokers huddle in a noxious cloud outside bars and restaurants. The smoking ban claims smoking within 25 feet of bars and restaurants will be illegal too, but as in all three of the aforementioned cities, this probably won’t be enforced.

Mr. Pall Mall, Ms. Virginia Slim, and yes, even you, Mr. Djarum, your Evanston IL nights probably won’t suck as much as you might think. You will just have to get away from the thumping base to go smoke outside with your new-found smoker friends. Most clubs and bars understand your need and might stamp your hand for re-entry. By the end of the night, you could enjoy a new tattoo sleeve of your favorite bars and clubs.

Also, the Tobacco Lounge is becoming more popular in Chicago and it isn’t just for cigar smoking business men. Some have even begun serving food. Some are actually bars but are in the books as “Tobacco Lounges.”  If there is going to be any resistance by Evanston IL businesses, it will probably be in this way. ”I don’t know what you’ll find in a neighborhood pet shop,” to quote the Prohibition Simpson’s episode.

Either way, Evanston IL, the smoking ban is here to stay.
