Evanston’s Ecoquest camp is a hit

The City of Evanston’s Parks/Forest and Recreation departments have joined together to provide summer camps for children to include those with special needs.  At one out of 27 camps Evanston sponsors, many special-needs kids are having the time of their lives.  With the help of several volunteers and special aides, all children are included in every activity.  It is ensured that what is offered for one child, is offered for all.

Different camp activities include arts and crafts, sports, and “Backyard Bugs”, the Ecoquest camp’s personal specialty.  Several of the different camps participants include children with allergies, autism, ADHD, physical disabilities, diabetes, and down syndrome.  One of the perks about these camps is the personal relationships the counselors and aides gain with these children.  The ones in charge work together to find out which camp is best suited for each child.  The children get to interact with everyone, and while brought together, everyone gets a chance to learn something from each other.

The last of the sessions ended on August 4th, as children are soon heading back to school.  But know that for next year, this is a great way for children to spend their summers with fun and education working together.
