High-Rise on the Horizon for Evanston
Evanston may have its first true high-rise in the not so distant future, despite the concerns and opposition of many residents. The plans for this forty-nine story building were put before the city council months ago and given a green light to proceed even though the building doesn’t exactly fit into the vision many residents had for new downtown developments.
Focus Development, the company behind the project, cites increased tax revenue, more housing options and new retail space as solid positives for going ahead with construction. At a recent informational meeting both residents and business owners voiced valid arguments that ranged from too much competition for established retailers to forever changing the look and feel of downtown Evanston. Currently there are no buildings there that even come close in height to the proposed tower.
If the project does continue as planned, the end result will be 218 condos plus lower level retail space and parking in the forty-nine story building that will be constructed on Church Street. No exact time table was given by the developers, but unless more major opposition arises the controversial project will move forward and Evanston will have a new high-rise along the lines of Chicago Downtown Luxury Condos.
