History and General Information about Evanston, Illinois

Evanston was incorporated in 1863, about twelve years after John Evans, among others, founded Northwestern University on the north shore of Chicago. The city of Evanston was named in 1867.

During the Civil War, the town of Evanston fought on the side of the abolitionists. After the war, Evanston saw a huge economic and population boom. Between 1860 and 1870, the population quadrupled. Also during this time, an amendment was passed that prohibited the sale of alcohol within four miles of the Northwestern campus. Evanston became a town that supported the prohibition movement and the Women s Christian Temperance Union was founded in Evanston in 1874 by Francis Willard. Evanston continued to grow and remain independent of Chicago. Since then, the city has become known for its architecture and beautiful homes on the lake.

The City of Evanston is also a Township. Evanston Township has the same boundaries as the City of Evanston. During the governmental history of Evanston, the area was once part of Ridgeville Township. Once Evanston became incorporated as a village and then a city, many of the township s responsibilities were eliminated. Today, the city has absorbed most of the township s functions. The township has two elected officials who serve part-time, the Township Assessor and the Township Supervisor.
