Human Services Committee Votes to Ban Public Smoking in Evanston

The vote banned smoking in all Township bars and restaurants beginning on July 1, 2006. However, the proposed ban needs to be voted on by the full City Council to be ratified. Alderman Edmund Moran, 6th Ward, said, “The earlier we end it, the better opportunity we have to save someone’s life.”

The City of Chicago voted last year to ban smoking in public areas, but that doesn’t go into effect until July 2008, to allow local businesses to adapt. Evanston seems disinterested in waiting that long. “The experience in many places is that places actually do better when they go smoke-free,” said Ald. Moran. Currently in Evanston there are 33 establishments that permit smoking.

In opposition to the quick legislation was Alderman Steve Bernstein, 4th Ward. “Our economy is largely based on restaurants, and I just don’t think we can compete if our restaurants don’t have a level playing field with those in Chicago,” he said, referring to when the ban goes into effect. In fact, the reason many alderman voted against the ban was the enforcement date. The Evanston Chamber of Commerce has urged the aldermen not to move any faster than the City of Chicago in enforcing the ban.
