Independent and Chain retailers integrate in downtown Evanston

On August 16th, the monstrous book-selling retail chain Barnes and Noble will be opening a store in the heart of downtown Evanston.  Not only will this retail giant be opening, but five other retail giants have been invited to join the party by the end of August, according to assistant city manager Judith Aiello.

Pier 1 imports, Jos A. Bank, LA Fitness, Ann Taylor Loft and Washington Mutual Bank all plan to move in and open up before September.

A large factor in the decision-making process to allow these chains to come in, is the real estate dilemma.  Most of the property that is currently for rent, is space larger than any independent business could ever need.  These larger chains seek out larger space, which is what Evanston has recently been able to offer.  Landlords typically prefer to rent out to chains as opposed to an independent merchant, due to credit lines and success the chains have already established.

The plan and zoning committee has said it plans on keeping a nice mix between chain and independent retailers, and has looked at other college towns for examples of success.
