Northwestern does heavy duty Othello Project
According to their website, Northwestern students and faculty were busy this past summer getting together a “one university, one play” series about Othello by William Shakespeare. Last Thursday, there was a free viewing of a movie based on Othello. There are several other such events scheduled including a roundtable discussion Tuesday, September 26th, at 5 p.m., led by Wendy Griswold, a Northwestern sociologist, Ed Muir, historian, and Wendy Wall, a literary scholar. It is in Hagstrum Room, Room 201 of University Hall at 1897 Sheridan Road in Evanston, IL. The meeting is for Northwestern students and Evanston residents according to the Evanston website.
October “one university, one play” events include:
On Thursday, October 5th, at 7 p.m. in Room 107 of Harris Hall at 1881 Sheridan Road: Marjorie Garber from Harvard University will present a lecture titled, “Black and White and Read All Over: Othello and Modern Culture.”
On Wednesday, October 11th at 8 p.m. at the Block Cinema at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Drive in Evanston, IL, Orson Welles’ film “Othello” will be presented after an introduction by Northwestern theatre and English Professor Tracy Davis.
On Thursday October 19th at 5 p.m. in Room 102 of University Hall there will be another roundtable discussion led by Scott Curtis, Kevin Bell and Olateju Adesida about 3 movies based on Othello.
On Saturday, Ocotber 28th, 7 p.m. at a McCormick Tribune Center Forum: Shozo Sato will present on “Othello Kabuki Style.” Performances from Shato’s Kabuki-styled Othello titled “Othello’s Passion will be part of the event. Shozo Sato was director of Chicago Shakespeare Theatre’s production of “Kabuki Lady Macbeth.”
On Monday, October 30th at 5 p.m. Northwestern faculty members will explore the relationship between European, Arabic and African culture through a discussion of “A Season of Migration to the North,” a novel by Tayel Salih, an important contemporary Arabic writer. The Northwestern faculty members are Nasrin Qader, Christine Froula and Evan Mwangi. The event will take place in Hagstrum Room, Room 201 of University Hall. As mentioned earlier, University Hall is at 1897 Sheridan Road in Evanston, IL.
There are also events in November including a presentation by a Nobel prize winner, a presentation about dance and musical versions of Othello, and a Limon movement workshop.
Some of the presentations might be kind of deep for us mere mortals but I think I might enjoy some of them - particularly the Orson Welles film. Try to think of it as your cashing in on Northwestern’s educational tax break.
