The Lucky Platter in Evanston, IL

The Lucky Platter, 514 Main Street in Evanston, IL has some interesting eats.   When I go there, instead of ordering a meal like “Jerk Chicken” or homemade pizza, I usually order sides since I try to eat vegetarian a lot, and the side dishes are reasonably priced when purchased solo.  My favorite sides at the Lucky Platter are black beans and rice; French fried sweet potatoes and the salad with walnuts and apples as well as lettuce and tomatoes.  The corn bread is also good.
Another thing I like about the restaurant is the corny décor.  It is basically vintage 1950’s with some interesting twists.  One booth has a map of the Gulf of Mexico on it, and that is where I usually sit when I can because I grew up in Mobile, Alabama around the Gulf.  The Lucky Platter stays open on holidays a lot, and is usually crowded then and also on Sundays.  Other days tables and booths are more readily available.  Sometimes the owners have writing contests in which one explains why one likes the restaurant so much.  The winner is usually pretty articulate.  I have not gotten up enough nerve to enter any of the contests yet.
Parking might be a problem because it is across the street from the Starbucks on Main Street in Evanston.  When the bank is closed, you can probably get away with parking in its parking lot.  You can ask the officer who is stationed at Starbucks.
