What I’m Eating This Weekend

With friends coming into to town from the west coast this weekend, I need to be a great hostess and provide a meal that says “thanks for coming to a city that’s 60 degrees colder than your hometown.” After telling them about a restaurant experience I had not long ago, they don’t hesitate in deciding that they want to try Asado Brazilian Grill at 1012 Church Street in Evanston.

On the day my dining companion and I went, we arrived around 6pm and were instantly nervous due to the presence of only two other couples. We decide to give it a shot anyway. After all, it was all you can eat and we smelled meat cooking.

After being seated in the classic Spanish-styled dinning area, our waiter describes the system. There is a small wooden cylinder painted green on one end, red on the other. Green signals the “gauchos” to please bring out one of their 18 mesquite charcoal-roasted meats that they carve at the table. This went along with the 40-item salad bar, which included grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes. There wasn’t much conversation as all of this was a lot to take in, other than “are you going to eat that piece of steak.” All of this rounded out with Asado’s signature caipirinhas made it a fun, delicious experience.

Great, now I’m hungry. Here’s to hoping for a second great experience!
