What s Happening To The City of Evanston and Its Real Estate?
Is it a city or a town? Over the past few years the City of Evanston has evolved from Northwestern s college town to more of a hopping city. The reactions are as mixed as the ethnicity here. The most recent decision was pro high-rise real estate. Kind of a bummer if you ask me. Here s the deal:
The Evanston City Council has permitted Robert King, the developer put up an 18-story high-rise at 1881 Oak. Believe it or not, the vote was unanimous — 6-3 to grant developer permission to erect the high-rise in the empty lot on Oak, next to Emerson Street, where the other buildings are way more modest in size. While some expressed concern about the number of tall buildings in Evanston other took the view that approving the project won’t open the floodgates for more tall buildings, as some critics have said, because officials will proceed “on a case-by-case basis , said Steven Bernstein.
If anything, he said, approval probably “precludes it from happening.”
Not sure about this whole real estate development craze these days Evanston looks more like a mini-Chicago with more franchises and less one-shot store fronts. I miss the days when it was more peace, love and granola than multi-movie house extravaganza and parking mayhem.
