Zero tolerance for driving unbuckled or while drinking….
The Evanston Police Department plans to have a traffic safety check from 8 p.m. on August 26th to 3:00 a.m. August 27th over the Labor Day Holiday this year. The check will be in the Evanston city limits in an area where the volume of traffic is high, according to an online Pioneer Press article. The
officers doing the check will be looking for intoxicated drivers, and also will scrutinize for other traffic violations. Be sure to buckle up. It’s the law.
The road check is part of a DUI enforcement campaign for the entire LaborDay Weekend. The name of the program is “You drink and drive – you lose.” The effort is part of a zero tolerance program for drinking and driving.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the Illinois Department of Public Transportation (IDOT), and local law enforcement agencies are teaming up in a very aggressive program throughout Illinois. The program started on
August the 18th and will run through the Labor Day Weekend. The state of Illinois is spending $700,000.00 to advertise the campaign, according to a news release
on the IDOT website.
According to the IDOT website, seat belt usage has increased to 88% since the seat belt law went in to effect, and fatalities from accidents are the lowest in 60 years.
